Gran to Vols

Eddie Gran

The super-staff is almost complete.

And it got one step closer today, as Eddie Gran became the latest hire by Lane Kiffin.  Gran, a long-time assistant of former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, will be leaving the Tigers to join Tennessee’s staff within the next few days.

Along with just about every other hire Kiffin has made this offseason, Gran has strong recruiting ties and is acklowledged as a strong recruiter in the competitive SEC.  He has been the running backs coach at Auburn since 1999, and before that he was at Ole Miss with Tuberville coaching running backs as well.  Unfortunately, his hire might be a sign that the only remaining staff member from the Phillip Fulmer era, Stan Drayton, could be on his way out of Knoxville.  It’s a shame, as Drayton is a solid recruiter and has been a huge factor on Tennessee keeping many of Fulmer’s recruits for this class.

Gran is also an accomplished recruiter, but his biggest strength is his experience.  With almost 15 years at running backs coach, Gran has coached the likes of Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown, Kenny Irons, Deuce McAlister and Rudi Johnson.   Not only has he coached running backs, but for the past six seasons Gran has been in charge of Auburn’s special teams, as well.  In 2006, he helped the Tigers to lead the SEC in kickoff coverage, field goal and PAT percentage, and punting.

The Tigers have had one of the finer running games in the SEC over the past 10 years, and that is likely due to solid coaching by Eddie Gran.  Now, we get to see what he’ll do with Montario Hardesty, Lennon Creer, Tauren Poole, David Oku and Toney Williams.

Can’t wait.
