From weakside to strongside

There will be a new home for Rico on the football field in 2009. (Icon SMI)

  • The SEC guru (as I so affectionately refer to him) Chris Low has put together a nice piece on Monte Kiffin‘s adjustment back to coaching in college football.  Low discusses how Monte has had to deal with the increase in beautiful co-eds decrease in practice time and how that is going to affect the way in which Kiffin Senior implements his heralded Tampa Tennessee 2 defense.  You can read the full article here.
  • After multiple players on offense switched positions for 2009, the defense has followed suit.  Rico McCoy looks to be moving from weakside linebacker to strongside, at least for spring practice.  According to Lance Thompson, the move gives Rico “more freedom to rush the passer as he will most likely be lined up against only a running back in pass-rush situations”.  It also appears Nick Reveiz will be opening spring practice at the middle linebacker position.
  • If you can’t wait until this fall for the first official game of the Kiffin-era, or if you can’t even wait until the annual Orange&White game on April 18th, then head over to Neyland Stadium this Friday night at 7:00 pm.  It’s been announced that 10,000 fans will be allowed into the stadium to see the Vols’ practice.  It’s not exactly a gameday experience, but it’s better than nothing.
  • The Vols began spring practice today, but there was definitely something lacking.  The green jerseys.  That’s right, there won’t be any non-contact jersey’s this spring, as Coach Kiffin says, “We’re not going to protect anybody.  We’re not good enough to do that. Maybe some day that happens down the road. But right now, we’ve got to figure out who can play.”
